TRANSITION FAIRRThe Riverhead Central School District Transition Program hosted the Annual East End Transition Fair. The fair was designed to bring together students and families in need of transitional services and give them the opportunity to speak with representatives from agencies and services, who offer programs for their children, in one central setting.

(October) Comments from previous years:
Transition Coordinator Elva Beyer wrote, "The Transition Fair was the most successful year yet. The high school cafeteria was bursting at the seams on Wednesday night with representatives of various adult agencies and families from across Long Island. This event is designed to provide an opportunity for the families of the East End school districts to become informed about transitioning to adult services. However, families came from as far as Southampton and the Three Village School District."
Riverhead Central School District’s Transition Team, Elva Beyer and Lisa Lindsay, hosted the event. “This is our fourth year hosting this event," noted Ms. Beyer. "Once again, I’m so thankful to all the participants of agencies who took the time, outside of their business hours, to meet with families. They are the most dedicated group of people, and I am honored to have them attend this event. Most of them have come back year after year to educate and bring the most current information available to support our families. Without this information and encouragement, many families might not be able to help their children make the leap out into the adult world and the information these services provide may help our students become more independent.”
Parent and Student Feedback
Mrs. Allen, a Riverhead parent, stated, “I felt the Transition Fair offered a wealth of information for parents who have a child with ‘Special Needs’ that will be graduating and continuing on with their lives--whether they are going to college or looking for employment. I feel it gives us, as parents, the information and knowledge of resources we wouldn't have known existed in helping with the direction of our children's future. The fair helped take away some of the anxiety and feeling of uncertainty as to what the future would be for my son. Endless thanks to the Riverhead Transition Program and the Special Education Department for bringing such an important event to us. My son Tyler graduates this year and I hope you continue to bring the fair here in future years. If you have a child with ‘Special Needs’ it really is a ‘Blessing’.”
Trish Calandra also stated, “Being a parent of two children with special needs, this transition fair was a fantastic resource to access lots of valuable information for those of us on the East End to help plan for the future. We found great information on adult programs, employment, recreation, guardianship & SSI. Thank you, Elva Beyer and Lisa Lindsay, for putting this great fair together!”
A number of Riverhead High School students attended with their families and found the fair to be informative.
Tyler Allen, a senior at RHS stated, “The Transition Fair was good, because it shows you different things you can do after school!”
Junior Jesse Blackwell commented, “It helped me to think about the different things available after high school.”
